It brings together three distinct data sources \u2014 Aurora proprietary project data, installer research, and homeowner research \u2014 to provide, well, a snapshot of where the residential solar industry is now. Perhaps you\u2019ve heard of California\u2019s Net Billing Tariff, aka NEM 3.0? Yes? Well, we don\u2019t need to rehash everything here (but, for some background, <a href=\"https:\/\/aurorasolar.com\/blog\/explaining-and-modeling-californias-net-billing-tariff-nem-3-0\/\">we do here<\/a>), so let\u2019s just say: When NEM 3.0 was announced, there was a rush to get grandfathered in NEM 2.0, then a slowdown in installations when NEM 3.0 took effect.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, as is often the case, policies <s>intended to slow solar down<\/s> that just so happen to affect solar negatively may work to slow down installs in the short term, but in the long term solar is undeniable. Solar installers are innovative, and they\u2019re already innovating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One potentially game changing innovation is battery storage for self consumption.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditionally, when we thought of batteries, it was for backup power, like a generator \u2014 a better, less polluting, more efficient generator.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, with time-of-use rate structures that penalize those with solar panels for exporting power during the day, then penalize people again for using energy from the grid during peak evening times, a novel use case for batteries is developing: storing solar energy in a battery during the day, and using it at peak times can drive real ROI.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re already beginning to see the impact of this trend. Let\u2019s look at another set of numbers, this time, it\u2019s data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energysage.com\/press\/energysage-marketplace-intel-report-18\/\">EnergySage<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In California there\u2019s been a nearly <em>45% increase<\/em> in storage attachment since NEM 3.0 went into effect in April 2023&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>80%<\/em> of EnergySage shoppers in California are now requesting storage quotes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, it&#8217;s not just California. States across the country are adopting similar policies. Our Snapshot data backs this up: \u200b\u200b<em>More than 80%<\/em> of solar professionals all over the US said they saw increased homeowner interest in energy storage plus solar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps our favorite graphic from the entire Snapshot shows how it works:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"711\" height=\"581\" src=\"https:\/\/aurorasolar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Storage-Self-Consumption-Snapshot-Blog.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aurorasolar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Storage-Self-Consumption-Snapshot-Blog.png 711w, https:\/\/aurorasolar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Storage-Self-Consumption-Snapshot-Blog-300x245.png 300w, https:\/\/aurorasolar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Storage-Self-Consumption-Snapshot-Blog-320x261.png 320w, https:\/\/aurorasolar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Storage-Self-Consumption-Snapshot-Blog-448x366.png 448w, https:\/\/aurorasolar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Storage-Self-Consumption-Snapshot-Blog-508x415.png 508w, https:\/\/aurorasolar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Storage-Self-Consumption-Snapshot-Blog-100x82.png 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 711px) 100vw, 711px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Battery storage for self-consumption can really add to the ROI of a solar system. (Hat tip to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/abilambert\/\">Abi Lambert<\/a> for developing this chart, and designing the Snapshot.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I mean, check out that grid usage. With solar alone it&#8217;s 55%, with solar and battery it&#8217;s down to 30%. And it avoids grid usage during the most expensive part of the day, as well. That&#8217;s measurable ROI \u2014 money in the homeowner&#8217;s pocket \u2014 and a real selling point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s just another example of why we\u2019re so optimistic about solar\u2019s future. Every time there\u2019s an obstacle thrown at the industry, solar companies come up with innovative solutions. NEM 3.0? High interest rates? Supply chain issues?
