There are two general categories of expenses \u2013 capital costs and operations &amp; management (O&amp;M) costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"capitalcosts\">Capital costs<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Capital costs refer to the fixed, one-time expenses associated with designing and installing solar PV systems. These can further be categorized into hard costs and soft costs:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hard costs cover expenses related to the <\/span><b><i>physical<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> equipment that goes into a solar PV system \u2013 including modules, inverters, balance of system (BoS) components, optional batteries, and even electric-vehicle charging.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soft costs include intangible expenses stemming permitting, taxes, financing, customer acquisition, and the actual installation labor itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), hard costs have come down dramatically over the last decade, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seia.org\/research-resources\/solar-soft-costs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soft costs have remained largely constant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, tools like Aurora Solar <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lead capture<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aurorasolar.com\/sales-mode\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">solar sales<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aurorasolar.com\/design-mode\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PV design<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> platforms can help your team drive down these soft costs \u2013 allowing you to service more customers using fewer resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caption\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1090\" src=\"https:\/\/aurorasolar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Copy-of-Solar-Soft-Costs-blog-post-draft-1-300x232.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caption\">Figure 1. Fiedman, et al, &#8220;Benchmarking Non-hardware BoS Costs for US PV Systems, Using a Bottoms-Up Approach and Installer Survey,&#8221; National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Second Edition, December 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Figure 1 illustrates the relationship between soft and hard costs, with the latter broken down into its components. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"operationandmanagementcosts\">Operations and management costs<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O&amp;M costs refer to expenses associated with running, maintaining, and repairing a solar PV installation. These can include fuel, repairs, and operation personnel. But with virtually zero moving parts and panels backed with multi-decade warranties, residential and commercial PV systems generally have low O&amp;M costs. Maintenance requirements can change, however, when managing industrial-scale solar facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"incentivesandpoliciesthatbenefitsolarenergy\">Incentives and policies that benefit solar energy<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The high capital costs are one of the biggest factors that discourage people from going solar. To combat this, there are a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aurorasolar.com\/blog\/financial-incentives-for-installing-solar\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">number of incentives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and policies in place to make PV systems financially competitive. Being able to explain how these programs work will allow you to convert more customers. This is especially true if you facilitate the paperwork and applications on their behalf.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"costbasedincentives\">Cost-based incentives<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cost based incentives, such as the Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC), allow those who invest in a solar system to apply a tax credit towards their income tax. The incentive is determined by the cost of the system and is independent of its performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ITC was originally scheduled to expire at the end of 2023. But thanks to a 10-year extension under the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, PV system owners qualify for a one-time 30% tax credit in the year after their installation becomes operational.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, some cities and states offer cash rebates for those who go so solar. For a list of potential rebate programs in your service market, visit the Database of State Incentives for Renewables &amp; Efficiency (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dsireusa.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DSIRE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"performancebasedincentives\">Performance-based incentives<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performance based incentives (PBIs) encourage PV system owners to install and maintain efficient systems through payments that are based on the monthly energy production of the PV system. These programs are highly regional and might not be available in your service area.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"netenergymetering\">Net energy metering<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most states across the country offer some form of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aurorasolar.com\/how-solar-customers-save-money\/#How-Net-Metering-Works\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">net energy metering (NEM)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 a mechanism that credits consumers for any unused solar power they send into the electricity grid.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, if a residential PV system produces an excess of 100 kWh over the course of the month, the owner will be reimbursed for 100 kWh worth of utility credits (usually at below-market rates). The owner is then free to use these reimbursement credits to \u201cbuy\u201d electricity from the grid when solar is not meeting their current energy needs. Therefore, solar customers who enroll in their state\u2019s net metering program are able to significantly reduce their electricity bill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some states offer a similar program know as a feed-in tariff (FiT). Though less common, feed-in tariffs result in cash payments for unused solar power \u2013 and not utility credits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aurorasolar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Solar-production-energy-use.png\" alt=\"Home load profile and PV production over 24 hours\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caption\">Figure 2. Source: solarchoice.net.au<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Figure 2 shows the relationship between PV electricity production and electricity consumption during the day. Note that while the PV system can generate more than enough solar electricity during the daytime, it can fail to deliver electricity during peak consumption hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"basicfinancialcalculationforaresidentialpvsystem\">Basic financial calculation for a residential PV system<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In return for a large upfront investment, homeowners that go solar benefit from reduced monthly electricity bills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, assume that upon installing a $10,000 rooftop PV system (after incentives), a customer\u2019s residential electricity bill is reduced by $1,500 per year. In order to calculate the simple payback period, which is the approximate time for a PV system to \u201cbreak even,\u201d we divide the cost of the PV system by the savings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Simple Payback Period = System Cost \/ Annual Savings<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>6.7 years = $10,000 \/ $1,500\/year<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, the payback period for a $10,000 PV system that saves a customer $1,500 in annual electricity bills is 6.7 years.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, a PV system can last much longer than the duration of its payback period. Standard rooftop panels have <\/span><b><i>warrantied<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lifetimes of about 25 years. This means that for the last 18 years of its life, after it has paid itself off, the hypothetical PV system described above will deliver net returns in the form of additional savings. To calculate these returns, we multiply the annual savings by the remaining lifetime of the system, after it has paid itself off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Total Savings = Annual Savings \u00d7 Years (after Payback Period)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>$27,450 = $1,500\/year \u00d7 18.3 years<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on this simple analysis, the system will generate approximately $27,450 in savings over its lifetime. It is important to note that this is an approximation and does not take into account factors such as maintenance costs or degradation over time. However, as grid electricity prices increase, the value of the PV system increases as well. This is because solar helps to shield the user from rate increases \u2013 resulting in a shorter payback period and higher lifetime savings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The figure below shows another financial analysis for a hypothetical residential PV system. In both graphs, the y-axis is the dollar amount and the x-axis is the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caption\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3147\" src=\"https:\/\/aurorasolar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/OG-scf-financing-1024x792.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"495\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caption\">Figure 3. The cumulative (top) and annual (bottom) cash flows of a hypothetical PV system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The top graph, which shows the cumulative cash flow of the project over time, and indicates that the project has a payback period of approximately four years. Additionally, the dollar amount in the 25<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0year, which is about $25,000, is the cumulative net savings that the system generated. The bottom graph is the annual cash flow of the project. The first year is characterized by a large negative cash flow, due to the large upfront cost required to install the system.
