While the pandemic did <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seia.org\/research-resources\/covid-19-impacts-us-solar-industry#:~:text=Due%20to%20the%20COVID%2D19,forecasted%20%E2%80%93%20a%2038%25%20decline.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slow solar growth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the past couple years, the residential solar market did grow by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seia.org\/solar-industry-research-data\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over 30% in 2021<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and looks strong over the next few years \u2014 despite facing supply chain issues and materials shortages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the main things that will help the industry continue to grow? As usual, it comes back to the incredible pace of solar technology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this blog, we\u2019ll look at some of the technological developments we find most exciting, and how they might affect the solar market and installers. This is by no means an exhaustive list, please let us know what you\u2019re seeing out there and how you\u2019re adapting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Solar Tech in 2022<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some solar technologies in 2022 that we\u2019re keeping an eye on.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perovskite Cells<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2022\/01\/220121124856.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perovskite cells<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are flexible, lightweight, and low-cost solar cells made using perovskite and organic materials. Perovskite cells hold promise to enhance photovoltaic deployment in a wide range of applications, such as powering vehicles and boats. But they\u2019ve traditionally suffered from a couple challenges: efficiency and instability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year has seen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/news\/235694\/cheaper-solar-cells-could-thanks-materials\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a few research groups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.ktu.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">around the world<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> make real progress on the instability front.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By adding a ferrocene layer \u2014 essentially compounds with iron at their core \u2014 researchers from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City University of Hong Kong made perovskite cells more stable and more efficient. In fact, in lab tests, this ferrocene layer could boost the efficiency of perovskite devices to 25%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These devices still face some real challenges, for example, scaling them up to size that\u2019s useful for residential purposes. Right now, \u201cthe device area was defined and characterized as 0.08 cm2 by metal shadow mask.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, perovskite is still more on the level of an &#8220;interesting tech to watch&#8221; right now.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2853 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/aurorasolar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/benefits-of-perc-solar-panels-1024x486.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"304\" \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More Efficient Solar Modules<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2020, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrel.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Renewable Energy Laboratory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NREL) announced that it developed a six-junction solar cell <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrel.gov\/news\/press\/2020\/nrel-six-junction-solar-cell-sets-two-world-records-for-efficiency.htmlndra-de-los-modulos-solares-mas-eficientes-del-mundo-87.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prototype that achieved an impressive 47.1% efficiency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This new technology isn\u2019t available for consumer photovoltaic installations for a number of reasons, but that doesn\u2019t mean we don\u2019t continue to make great strides in solar panel efficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most efficient panels available to consumers are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/most-efficient-solar-panels-2653275099.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pushing 23% efficiency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> now, compared to about 15% just 10 years ago. Even incremental gains mean generating more power on smaller roof areas, lowering payback times and making solar attractive to more people.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recycled Silicon<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While a big part of solar\u2019s appeal to many people is its environmental benefits, what to do when panels reach the end of their life is becoming an increasingly important question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/solar\/solar-photovoltaic-cell-basics\">silicon-based technology <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">represents<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> approximately 95% of total solar production, so anything we can do to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2021\/08\/19\/1032215\/solar-panels-recycling\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make panels more recyclable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a huge plus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A group of German researchers recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2022\/02\/07\/german-consortium-develops-19-7-efficient-perc-solar-cells-made-of-recycled-silicon\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced the development of 19.7% efficient PERC solar cells made from 100% recycled silicon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Silicon was recovered from end-of-life silicon panels, and could be recycled regardless of panel type, make, or origin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is just one example of the work being done in the recycling space, but the upside of this work is potentially huge. Silicon recycling will combat waste and create new markets for end-of-life solar products, while creating new streams of raw materials for panel manufacturing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solar Energy Storage<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solar energy storage is another area where we expect to see significant growth in 2022. For reasons from energy independence to backup power, homeowners are increasingly considering solar battery storage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This market is driven by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/these-3-energy-storage-technologies-can-help-solve-the-challenge-of-moving-to-100-renewable-electricity-161564\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continuous improvements in battery technology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including high-capacity batteries with long discharge times \u2014 up to 10 hours is on the horizon. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aurorasolar.com\/blog\/how-solar-energy-storage-works\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This article shows more about what\u2019s available in battery tech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with improvements in battery technology, to really sell it to potential customers, modeling software has had to improve, too.
